We got a late start today after the excitement of last night. Left Chicago and drove to Milwaukee. The area has a German and Scandanavian heritage, so we had lunch at Mader's, a German restaurant. They had a good German beer sampler -- Spaten's Optimator, Pilsner, Lager, and Oktoberfest; Franzikaner's Hefe Weisse (very smooth for a wheat beer!) and Dunkel. Walked around downtown, around the river walk a bit, then east to the lake.
Saw the art museum and eavesdropped on the world's largest music festival, some Melloncamp cover band was playing.
Left Milwaukee, stopped at the Mousehouse Cheesehaus. The AAA book said you can't visit Wisconsin without tasting the cheese. Laurel broke that rule.
On the drive to Devil's Lake State Park in Baraboo I called my good ole friend Renee who used to live in/near Minneapolis. She gave us a few fun things to do in the twin cities.
Wisconsin has county highways that are letters instead of numbers.
There are lots of dairy farms. We set up camp at the park and drove over to the West Bluffs to scope out the climbing. There are some towers we'll try to climb in the morning. It started raining as we were walking back down the trail in the dark. (Listen to the frogs at the lake.)
Made quesadillas for dinner. We only had one stick for firewood but I managed to get enough of a fire going so we could toast marshmallows for s'mores. Good 4th of July treat.

The frog that sounds like a plucked banjo string is the American greenfrog.
